IDENTIFIED GAR STICK PIN FOR SOLDIER IN 17TH PENNSYLVANIA CAVALRY

Small gold GAR star meas. approx. 1.00 inch wide. Each of the 5-points of the star has what look to be three small cannonballs around the edge. The arms of the star between each point are decorated with engraved tick marks. At center of the star is an engraved circle with an engraved design of crossed sabers with “CO.B 17 PA./POST” in two lines above and “139” below. The sabers are flanked by the engraved initials “E. T.” The body of each of the 5 arms has an engraved linear decoration. Attached to the reverse of the star is a 2.00 inch long stick pin with a twisted center.

The initials on the pin are for Edward E. Thayer who enlisted in Company B, 17th Pennsylvania Cavalry as a Private on September 21, 1862. He was promoted to Corporal on August 1, 1863 and to Sergeant on November 1, 1864. He was eventually mustered out on June 16, 1865.

The Lieut. Ezra S. Griffin GAR Post 139 was located in Scranton, PA.

During his time with the 17th it was engaged at Occoquan, Chancellorsville,  Brandy Station, Aldie, Upperville, Falling Waters, Wilderness, Todd’s Tavern, Spotsylvania, Cold Harbor, Trevillian Station, Ream’s Station, Deep Bottom, Front Royal, Opequan, Fisher’s Hill, Dinwiddie Court House and Five Forks.
