Colored scroll print, published by the “Army and Navy Co.”. 21’ x 27.75”, in an ornately carved wooden frame, 29 x 35”, with interior, scalloped metallic trim, reverse board backing and hang-wire. Print exhibits light soiling, else VG. Frame fine.

Scroll features spread-eagle above, flanked by soldier-scene vignettes at sides and bottom. John Herrold’s service is summarized in center block of cursively written prose; to wit, mustered as 2nd Lieutenant into Co. “A”, 172nd PA. Infantry [nine month regiment], 10/22/1862. Becoming sick with smallpox, he spent three months in the hospital before returning to his regiment in early March 1863. Promoted to 1st Lieutenant 3/21/1863, followed by Garrison duty till July, when his regiment moved to Hagerstown to harry the rebels during General Lee’s retreat from Gettysburg. Mustered out 8/1/1863… Honorably discharged, Herrold became a member of the “Captain Davis” GAR Post 148, Selinsgrove, PA. The Scroll concludes in the lower margin with following presentation inscription: “Presented by [GAR} comrade Herrold to his wife Rosesa L. and children M. Daisy, C. Ellen, Charles L., Levi, Elizabeth, Davis A, and Ned, Jul. 15, ’02.”
