Scroll memorial, 25.75 x 15.5”, in wooden frame (28” x 17 3/4”) with scalloped outer edge & gilt inner trim. Memorial features colored wingspread eagles above with flags. Cursively written memorial, in white script against black background, framed round with colorful Union Army Corps badges. Frame exhibits light wear, else Vg plus to fine.

Memorial opens with an account of Sergt. Gray’s service, which was brief. Mustered as a sergeant on 7/9/1862, and was promoted to 2nd Lieutenant, but became ill and never served in that capacity. He was honorably discharged on a surgeon’s certificate, /3/18/1863, and died 6/30/ 1891.

The remainder of the written memorial is an exhaustive listing of 9th Vermont activities during the course of the war, which were extensive. The unit was captured at Bolivar Heights, Harper’s Ferry, by Jackson’s Corps during the 1862 Maryland campaign. Following parole, the regt. guarded Confederate prisoners at Chicago’s Camp Douglas, and later at City Point, Va. After which they participated in action at Suffolk, and New Berne, NC, before being sent to New York City during the 1864 presidential election. After which they served in the trenches before Richmond through April 1865. Following the Confederate surrender a battalion of veterans remained with the army through December 1, 1865. During service the unit lost 24 men killed and mortally wounded and 281 by disease for a total of 305.

Although Sergeant Gray’s service was brief, this piece is a fine memorial for the 9th Vermont. Highly attractive wall piece.
