Measures 18 x 24”, in thin wooden frame (19 ¼” x 25”), with card & paper backing and hang-wire. Also an old business sticker: “H.C. Lauterbach/ Photographs & Photo Finishing/ Picture Framing/ 102 Main Street/ Dobbs Ferry. N.Y.”
Made of beige stitched cotton with colored numerals [1 to 10] and repeated alphabet lettering. Features a left margin scroll, centered poem, with signature block & house and tree at bottom. In condition, slightly faded with slight light soiling in open right margin.
Red lettered signature block: “Hannah. Jane. Grieve. Aged 13. Simcoe. Jul. 21/ st. 1851”. Brief internet research indicates that she was likely from Simcoe, Ontario, Canada. Born in Palermo, Ontario in 1838, she married Scottish born Dr. Thomas Nichol in Simcoe in 1859. Hannah died in 1909 in Maine, and is buried in Mount Royal Cemetery in Montreal.
