Leather wallet is tan in color and tri-fold style. It has a leather strap which wraps around the outside of the wallet and tucks into a leather flap. It belonged to Major Frederick A. Briscoe, who was an officer in the Quartermaster Department of the Confederate Army. On the inside middle section it is signed, “F.A. BRISCOE, NEAR CHARLESTOWN, JEFFERSON CO. VA”.  Leather is supple with some scuffs, but no cracks or crazing. Stitching is tight, with the exception of a 2” section on one of the inner pockets. Wallet measures 6 ½ “w x 3 ¾” h while closed. When open, wallet measures 9 ½” h. Strap measures 9”.

Frederick Briscoe was born on July 26, 1819 in Shepherdstown, Virginia. He attended the University of Virginia and was a farmer in Jefferson County. He is listed in April of 1861 as a Colonel in the Quartermaster Department of the Provisional Army of Northern Virginia. He was made Captain Assistant Quartermaster on October 24, 1861. He was Post Quartermaster at Charlestown and managed transportation for the Army of the Valley in early 1862, as supernumerary. He may have been Volunteer Aide de Camp to General T.J. (Stonewall) Jackson at First Winchester. He was Captain Assistant Quartermaster in the Valley district in September 1862. He then spent the remainder of the war collecting and forwarding leather to the army of Northern Virginia and supervising tanneries. After the war, he returned to farming in Charlestown and died there on April 9, 1882. Stonewall Jackson said Briscoe was, “an enterprising and valuable officer”.
