This volume was written by Edward Alexander Moore, a private in the Rockbridge Artillery, who served under Stonewall Jackson. The author inscribed in pen on the first page, the words, “JOSEPH PACKARD- A MESSMATE IN THOSE GAY, DARK & BLODDY DAYS, AND A LIFE LONG FRIEND- WITH THE COMPLIMENTS OF EDWARD A. MOORE JUNE 1916”.  This first edition was published in 1910 and has introductions written by both Captain Robert E. Lee Jr. and the Hon. Henry St. George Tucker. This book has the added attraction of being id’d to Joseph Packard, also of the 1st Rockbridge Artillery.

The book features several portraits including Stonewall Jackson, various soldiers of the Rockbridge Artillery, and the author himself, both as a young soldier and at the time of this publishing.

Book has a dark green cloth cover with gold gilt lettering on the front cover and spine. The binding of the book is tight, with no loose pages. Corners and edges are slightly worn and some flaws are present throughout the cloth. Gold lettering is still bright. Pages are slightly yellowed. Book measures 8- 5/8 “x 5 ¾“x 1- 3/8“ and contains 336 pages. Overall, the volume is in nice, used condition.

The author, Edward A. Moore was born on October 21, 1842 in Lexington, Virginia. He was a student at Washington College at the outbreak of the Civil War, and enlisted in the Rockbridge Artillery as a Private in March of 1862. He was wounded in September at Sharpsburg, and eventually returned to Lexington to recover. He returned to his battery in January of 1863 and was at the battles of Chancellorsville, Winchester, Gettysburg, and Cold Harbor, where he was again seriously wounded. He was back in service in September in the defense of Richmond, then at Petersburg. He ended his service at Appomattox in April of 1865. Moore had three brothers who also served in the Confederate army.  He died on November 18, 1916 and is buried in the Stonewall Jackson Memorial Cemetery in Lexington, Virginia.

The owner of this volume, Joseph Packard, was born on April 10, 1842 in Alexandria, Virginia. He was a graduate of Kenyon College in 1860 and enlisted on July 7, 1861 at Camp Johnson, Virginia as a private in the 1st Rockbridge Light Artillery. He received several promotions and ended his service at Appomattox. After the war, he worked as a lawyer and president of a schoolboard in Baltimore, Maryland. He died on November 24, 1923 and is buried in Green Mount Cemetery in Baltimore.

There is no better way to describe this book than to quote the introductions. Robert E. Lee Jr. wrote, “The author was a cannoneer in the historic Rockbridge Artillery, which made for itself, from Manassas to Appomattox, a reputation second to none in the Confederate service. No more vivid picture has been presented of the private soldier in camp, on the march, or in action. Since the war I have known him intimately, and it gives me great pleasure to be able to say that there is no one who could give a more honest and truthful account of the events of our struggle from the standpoint of a private soldier.” Henry St. George Tucker said, “It is safe to say that Virginia furnished no finer examples of true valor that our author and his three brothers.”
