Full title of this volume is “THE STORY OF THE THIRTY-THIRD N.Y.S. VOLS: TWO YEARS CAMPAIGNING IN VIRGINIA AND MARYLAND BY DAVID W. JUDD, (CORRESPONDENT OF THE NEW YORK TIMES).

Book has several illustrations throughout, including Col. R. F. Taylor and various locations where battles took place.

The author, David W. Judd, enlisted at 23 years old, on July 21, 1862 at Harper’s Ferry, NY as a Private in the 22nd NY Infantry. He mustered out on September 5, 1862 at New York, NY. The book features first-hand accounts of the campaigns as well as the regimental records in the back of the book.

This book measures 7 ½” x 5” x 1 ½“ and has a brown cloth cover with decorative embossing. There is gold embossed lettering on the spine and on center image on front cover which a wreath, musket and sword. There is evidence of water damage on the lower half of the book, as the front and back covers both are wrinkled, and the pages throughout have a very light brown stain on the bottom half. Pages have yellowed with age but none are loose and binding is tight. Corners are slightly bent and at the top of the spine the cover has a small tear. Text contains 425 pages.

This volume is id’d to Otis Cole, who put his signature in the book at the top of the preface. He enlisted on August 28, 1862 at Rochester, N.Y. as a 1st Lieutenant. On October 17, 1862 he was commissioned into Co. “H” 33rd NY Infantry. He was mustered out on June 2, 1863 at Geneva, NY.

The 33rd N.Y.S.V. was mustered in on July 3, 1861 and mustered out on June 2, 1863. This regiment, organized by Col. Robert F. Taylor, was accepted by the State May 22, 1861; organized at Elmira, and there mustered in the United States service for two years July 3, 1861, to date from May 22, 1861. In October, 1862, Company D was disbanded, and a new company formed in its place of recruits joined at that time. May 14, 1863, the three years' men of the regiment were attached to the 49th Infantry, and October 1, 1863, transferred to the companies of the same.

The regiment left the State July 8, 1861; served at and near Washington, D. C. from July 9, 1861; in W. F. Smith's Brigade, Army of Northeastern Virginia, from. August 4, 1861; in Stevens' Brigade, Smith's Division, Army of the Potomac, from September 25, 1861; in Davidson's, 3d, Brigade, Smith's Division, 4th Corps, Army of the Potomac, from March 13, 1862; in the 3d Brigade, 2d Division, 6th Corps, Army of the Potomac, from May, 1862, and was honorably discharged and mustered out, under Colonel Taylor June 2, 1863, at Geneva, N. Y.

During its service the regiment lost by death, killed in action, 1 officer, 29 enlisted men; of wounds received in action, 2 officers, 15 enlisted men; of disease and other causes, 105 enlisted men; total, 3 officers, 149 enlisted men; aggregate, 152; of whom 1 officer and 1 enlisted man died in the hands of the enemy.
