This glass inkwell has a pewter cap which screws onto a pewter base that is attached on the glass. There is a hole in the top of the pewter which, when turned clockwise, closes the hole. On the side of the pewter lid is a hand engraved inscription which reads, “LT. COL. G M EDGAR 26TH VA”. There is a maker’s mark on the top of the pewter lid which is illegible due to some slight scratches on the surface. The patina on the pewter has darkened with age. The underside of the glass inkwell has a raised single star design. The interior of the glass still has remnants of black ink present.

Inkwell is id’d to George Matthews Edgar. He was born on March 1, 1837 in Union, Virginia, and was an alumnus of both the University of Virginia and Virginia Military Institute. He was working as a professor of natural science in Tallahassee, Florida at the start of the Civil War. He enlisted at the age of 24, on April 5, 1861, as a Private in Co. “D”, 1st Florida Infantry. He was mustered out on April 4, 1862. On June 13, 1861 he was mustered into Co. “D”, 59th Virginia Infantry. He was discharged for promotion on July 27, 1861 and was commissioned into Co. “D”, 26th Virginia Battalion Infantry. While in the 26th Virginia Infantry he received a promotion to Lt. Col, and then to 1st Lieutenant on July 3, 1861. He was promoted to Captain on July 27, 1861. He is listed as a POW and was exchanged on September 21, 1862 at Aiken’s Landing, Virginia.

After the Civil War, Edgar became the President of the Seminary West of the Suwannee River, in Tallahassee, Florida, the institution that eventually became Florida State University. He served in that office from 1887-1892. There is a statue of him on the FSU campus. He was also President of Arkansas Industrial University, now the University of Arkansas, from 1884-1887.

George Matthews Edgar died on October 18, 1913 at the age of 76 in Paris, Kentucky and is buried there.
