This volume was published in Columbia, South Carolina in 1864 under the authority of the Confederate Congress. It was arranged by attorneys Capt. W. W. Lester of the Quartermaster-General’s Office and Wm. J. Bromwell of the Department of State.

Its purpose was to be a resource that could be consulted for the military and naval laws of the Confederacy. Some of the topics covered include: general organization of the army, pay rations, recruiting, camps of instruction, supplies, clothing, drunkenness, retirement of officers, hospitals, and prisoners of war.

This book is ID’D to Captain Charles Minor Blackford (October 17, 1833-March 10, 1903) who signed on the first page, “CAPT. BLACKFORD A.H.G.DEPT.”. Captain Blackford was a lawyer and resident of Lynchburg, Virginia. He enlisted at 27 years old on May 13, 1861 as a 1st Lieut. In Co. “B” 2nd Virginia Cavalry. On August 27, 1861 he was promoted to Captain. He was discharged for promotion on February 1, 1863 and was commissioned into CS Gen Staff. He became Judge Advocate on Longstreet’s staff.

Book has marbled boards with black cloth on the spine. Title is labeled on the spine. Corners are slightly bent and edges are lightly worn. Some surface dirt is present and there is a black spot on the upper right corner. On the front cover, where it attaches to the spine, the lower half is splitting. Pages have yellowed with age but none are loose and binding is tight.

Book measures approx. 8 ½” x 5 ½” x ¾”. Text contains 330 pages.

This is an excellent source for Confederate militaria and naval collectors.
