Hardcover volume meas. approx. 6.00 x 9.00 inches and runs 206 pages. Title is “THE VIRGINIA CONVENTION OF 1776: A DISCOURSE DELIVERED BEFORE THE VIRGINIA ALPHA OF THE PHI BETA KAPPA SOCIETY, IN THE CHAPEL OF WILLIAM & MARY COLLEGE IN THE CITY OF WILLIAMSBURG, ON THE AFTERNOON OF JULY 3RD, 1855 BY HUGH BLAIR GRIGSBY.” The volume was published in Richmond in 1855.

The exterior of the book is hardcover wrapped in brown cloth with an embossed decoration at center of both the front and back covers. Cover corners are slightly worn. Spine has title in worn gold lettering with some chipping and material loss in the crease.

The volume is clean on the interior except for a water stain along the lower left edge. The stain does not touch any of the print and it gets smaller as you go through the first several pages and by page 17 it is no longer visible.

The front cover has separated from the book and remains attached only by the cloth on the outside. The inside top of the cover has a period ink inscription that reads “PURCHASED AT MARTINSBURG VA. DEC. 1861. / J. PACKARD JR.” The first blank page has a light period pencil inscription in large letters that reads “PACKARD.”

This volume came with a number of books identified to Joseph Packard Jr. who served in the Rockbridge Artillery of Virginia during the Civil War.

Joseph Packard Jr. was born on April 10, 1842 in Alexandria, Virginia. He graduated from Kenyon College in 1860 with a degree in law.

On July 7, 1861 at Camp Johnston, Virginia he enlisted as a Private in the 1st Company of the 1st Virginia Light Artillery also known as The Rockbridge Artillery. The battery served with the Army of Northern Virginia in all of its campaigns. Private Packard rose through the ranks being promoted 6th Corporal on April 22, 1862, 4th Corporal on June 3, 1862, 2nd Corporal on September 9, 1862 but was reduced to Private on November 15, 1862. At some unknown point during his service Packard was made a 2nd Lieutenant and served as Ordnance Officer on the staff of Lieutenant Colonel Briscoe G. Baldwin. Packard was present at the surrender on April 9, 1865.

After the war he lived in Baltimore and practiced law. He died there on November 24, 1923 and is buried in Green Mount Cemetery.

Packard purchased this volume after he joined the Confederate army and while his battery was stationed near Martinsburg. He no doubt carried it with him for a time.
