Item Code: 30-1497

This is a 36-inch cane carved from a piece of wood or possibly a root from a tree that grew on the shore of Lake Minnetonka. It has a 4-inch straight section followed by six twists and then another 14-inch straight section. All the carvings are raised. Starting at the top and going down you have a GAR star, Cavalry Corps, 7th, 14th, 1st, 4th, 11th, 17th, 6th, 23rd, 2nd, 19th, 8th, 20th, signal corps, 5th, 16th, 15th, 10th, Pioneer insignia, 22nd, 9th, 18th, Cavalry Corps, and 25th Corps insignias. It then has a fish, dove, letters GAR, arrows, hatchet, crossed cannons, the engineer insignia, and US flag. Next is Wilson's Cavalry Corpse insignia along side the date 1884. Below that in block letters is THIS STICKGREW ON THE SHORE OF LAKE MINNETONKA / CARVED BY W.W WRIGHT CO H 9 IA CAV. The cane has three minor age cracks in the turning section of the cane it is still very strong and can be handled. It also has a brass tip on the end. Truly a fine example of Civil War veterans folk art.

We have done little research on Wright other than discovering that only one W.W. Wright served in the 9th IA Cavalry and that was Wesley W. Wright. He was an 18 year old resident of Adel IA when he enlisted as a private on 10/9/1863. He mustered out on 5/25/1865 at Devall's Bluff, AR.
