Quantity Available: None

Item Code: 429-17

Volume meas. approx. 3.00 x 4.75 inches. The covers are covered in a thin brown cloth that has worn on the edges, corners and the spine. The front cover has separated from the volume but the cloth of the spine keeps it from being totally loose. The rest of the volume is holding together well.

Lightly inscribed in period pencil on the first page is “JERE WALTEMEYER / CO. G 12 REGT P.R.C. / PORTSMOUTH GROVE, R. I. 1863.” The rest of the interior shows some light surface dirt and discoloration of the paper from age.

Jeremiah Waltemeyer was born September 14, 1839. He enlisted in Harrisburg as a Corporal in Company G, 41st Pennsylvania (12th Regiment Pennsylvania Reserve Corps) on June 25, 1861. The regiment was assigned to the Army of The Potomac and saw action on the Peninsula, 2nd Bull Run, South Mountain, Antietam, Fredericksburg, Gettysburg, Wilderness, Spotsylvania and Weldon Railroad. Corporal Waltemeyer was mustered out on June 11, 1864.

A biography of Waltemeyer found online says that he was wounded in the foot at Charles City Crossroads. That may explain why he was in the hospital at Portsmouth Grove, Rhode Island when he received his pocket testament.

Waltemeyer married in 1865 and raised a family in York, Pennsylvania. He died on July 18, 1909 and is buried in Stewartstown Cemetery in Stewartstown, Pennsylvania.
