At some point he moved to West Chester, Pennsylvania and it was there that he enlisted as a Private in Company F, 97th Pennsylvania Infantry on September 23, 1861. Wainwright rose through the ranks rather quickly. He was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant on January 10, 1862 and to 1st Lieutenant on May 1, 1863. By November of 1864 he was Captain of his company but he was never mustered at that rank.

The 97th Pennsylvania served in the Carolina’s until 1864 when it was moved to Virginia with the Army of the James and was engaged at Bermuda Hundred, Cold Harbor and Petersburg. The regiment was assigned to General Terry’s provisional command for the attack on Fort Fisher. During the assault Wainwright led his regiment and was severely wounded. Hiding his wound he continued to lead his regiment until the fighting was over. For this action he was awarded the Medal of Honor.

Near the end of the war Wainwright received brevet promotions to Major, Lieutenant Colonel and Colonel. He died in Wilmington, Delaware in 1915 and is buried in Arlington National Cemetery.
