Intricately carved wooden cane belonged to Abner Ashby Lynn who served in the Confederate Army in the 4th Virginia Cavalry. Cane has a dark brown stain. Cane handle is in the shape of a ring, which has the name engraved, “A.A. LYNN” on the one side. Handle has a split in the wood with two screws inserted, which appears to be an old repair.  Top half of cane features an engraved leaf design all over, as well an engraved hand at the top of the base of cane which is grasping the ring handle. Cane is in two pieces, and slides together in the center. Wood all over is in excellent condition, with just some minor loss of finish. Cane tip is made of brass and has a darkened patina.

Cane measures 36” long including handle and brass tip. Handle measures 5 ¾” wide.  Brass tip is 2” long.

Abner Ashby Lynn was born on November 10, 1842 in Prince William County, Virginia. He enlisted as a Private on May 20, 1861 into Co. “A”, 4th Virginia Cavalry. He was listed as wounded seven times and was paroled on April 1, 1865 at Alexandria, Virginia. He was absent at the surrender because of being at home recovering from a wound. Lynn survived his wounds, married in 1873 and worked for the railroad. Lynn died on January 30, 1929 in the county of his birth. Included are extensive records on Aber Lynn and the 4th Virginia Cavalry.
