CAMP TRUNK IDENTIFIED TO SURGEON OF THE 4TH NEW HAMPSHIRE

$950.00 SOLD

Quantity Available: None

Item Code: 801-88

Leather trunk meas. approx. 28.00 inches long x 15.50 inches wide x 16.00 high. The leather on the exterior of the trunk is in good condition due to an outer canvas cover which will be described later.

The lid of the trunk opens and closes on iron hinges that are light rusted but work well. The lid has three rows of four tacks each with a large head. These are meant to protect the leather if the trunk was placed on its lid as well as for decoration. There were two thick leather straps securing the lid to the trunk but only one remains now. The lock and escutcheon are present but broken. Both ends of the trunk had leather handles but these two have broken. Despite the drawbacks mentioned the rest of the body is in good condition and holds its shape well and is strong.

When the trunk is open there is a removable tray stored in the lid. This tray is held in place by two sliding brass tabs which are present and working. The tray has a pocket on the bottom for holding papers. When the tray is removed from the top of the trunk it exposes another lid that can be opened allowing for storage.

The bottom portion of the trunk also has a removable tray with a lid that opens and closes on a cloth hinge that has split. The lid has decorative stitching in a diamond shape. This lower tray fits perfectly into the opening at bottom of the trunk.

When closed the trunk is able to be encased in a canvas cover that was manufactured with cutouts on each of the sides to give access to the leather handles mentioned above. This canvas cover has become very dirty from age and storage but is still strong despite some missing material in the front. From the wear patterns on the canvas and how snuggly it fits to the trunk there is no doubt that this is the original cover.

The bottom left of the cover below the cutout for the handle on that side has painted in black lettering “DR. J. C. EASTMAN / SURGEON 4TH REGT. / N. H. VOL.”
