This service medal consists of two pieces, a top bar and a drop suspended by a small chain.

The top bar of the medal reads “1861-1865” and between the two dates is a laurel wreath with the state of New Jersey Coat of Arms.

Suspended from the bar by two short chains is a circular drop. The obverse has a soldier standing in front of a cannon and flag at center. Around the edge is the inscription READY TO DIE FOR THE HONOR OF OUR COUNTRY.”

The reverse of the top bar has the original pin and the number “3998” which would be the medal’s serial number. The reverse of the drop reads “PRESENTED BY THE STATE OF NEW JERSEY TO THOS. H. DEVAUSNEY VETERAN OF THE UNION FORCES IN THE CIVIL WAR 1861-1865.” The soldier’s name has been engraved and differs in letter style from the rest of the inscription.

Medal is in excellent condition with a nice dark patina.
