Early version of an ID tag or disk, this small paper measures 2 7/8" x 1 5/8".  A small hole at left with a metal ring allows being worn around the neck.  Pre-printed form on each side is filled out in ink.  Side one reads, "IDENTIFIER / I am Azro Mills / Co. F 9th Reg't Maine Vols / 3d Brig. 2nd Div 10th Corps", below which is the verse "God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life."  On the reverse is "U.S. CHRISTIAN COMMISSION / Address my Wife / Martha A Mills / Corinna / Maine".  Below is the instruction to the soldier to "Suspend from the neck by a cord, and wear over the shirt - in battle, under.".

Born in 1825 in Waterboro, York County, Maine, Azro Mills was a 39 year old resident of Corinna, Maine when he was drafted on 9/20/64 as a Private.  On that date he mustered into Co. F, 9th Maine Infantry.  Listed as present with his regiment throughout his term of service. Discharged on 6/30/65. Mills died in 1913 in Corinna, ME and is buried there in Morse’s Corner Cemetery.
