11" x 14" matted display with a strand of the actual hair of George Washington and the Marquis de Lafayette, with copies of artist’s renderings of each, as well as a brief biography. Double matted on blue suede with Florentine gold trim. The strands are encased in a magnified box to enhance viewing.

The strand of hair belonging to George Washington descended in the family of his nephew, George Steptoe Washington, to his great-granddaughter Martha Washington of Philadelphia, the great-great-grandniece of President George Washington. George Steptoe Washington was the son of Samuel Walter Washington who died in 1781. George Washington acted as guardian for his nephew after his brother’s death.

The strand of Lafayette’s hair originated from a small lock that descended through the family of Mary Custis Lee with a note dated 1874 attesting to the origin of the hair. The lock was sold by Alexander Historical Auctions in 2013.

Lafayette served as a Major General under Washington during the Revolutionary War and they became fast friends for life. Besides serving in the American army, Lafayette also served America in the French court by enlisting financial and military aid for the fledgling nation.
