This is a small volume that was recovered on the Shiloh battlefield. The book is “The Temperance Manual” by Reverend Justin Edwards and published by the American Tract Society in New York. There is no date of publication, but prior to 1855 when Edwards died. The cover is a green cloth covered hard back. Front and back covers feature an impressed pattern while the spine has “Temperance Manual” and “Soldier’s Library” stamped in gold type. There is some minor wear and staining on the cover. The book has 96 pages and is complete. There is minor staining throughout and a very few pages exhibit pencil “scribble” obviously from a child.
Of major interest is a pencil inscription on the inside front cover. It reads: “Picked up on the Battlefield of Shiloh. April 6th 1862. J Brixey.” Also on that page is a pre-printed label for “J. Brixey. Manchester, Tenn.” The pencil inscription and the paper label look period correct. On the next page is a more modern address label which has been blacked out. This is a nice piece of Civil War and American History in very good condition. Research into Brixey’s identity certainly a possibility. [jet]
