ENGRAVED RAZOR IDENTIFIED TO 5TH NEW HAMPSHIRE SOLDIER

Standard folding razor in very good condition. Blade is marked on stem “WADE & BUTCHER /SHEFFIELD, ENGLAND” below this is a “B” in a circle followed by a long arrow and a Maltese cross. All is readable but the “WA” in WADE.

The gutta-percha handle is properly engraved “SERGT. J. W. FOGG / 5TH N. H. INF.”

Handle and razor show light wear from age but is in otherwise very nice condition.

John W. Fogg was born in Wolfeborough, New Hampshire but was residing in Dover when the Civil War began.

Fogg enlisted as a Private in Company B, 1st New Hampshire Infantry for 3 months and was discharged at Concord on August 9, 1861 after service in the Shenandoah Valley.

He next enlisted in as a Sergeant in Company H, 5th New Hampshire Infantry on October 19, 1861. This regiment was assigned to the Army of the Potomac and served with it through all its battles and campaigns from the Peninsula to Appomattox and leads the list of Fox’s “300 Fighting Regiments of the Civil War.” Fogg was wounded twice on the Peninsula first at Fair Oaks on June 1, 1862 and at White Oak Swamp on June 30, 1862. He was discharged for disability on November 3, 1862.

After recovering from his wound Fogg enlisted for a third time. On September 4, 1864 he enlisted as a Sergeant in Company D, 1st New Hampshire Heavy Artillery. He was promoted to 1st Sergeant on March 16, 1865. During his time of service the regiment served in the defenses of Washington. He was mustered out on June 15, 1865 at Washington, D.C.

After the war he returned to Dover but nothing else about him is known.    [ad]
