CIVIL WAR BLANKET ATTRIBUTED TO 7TH INDIANA CAVALRY TROOPER

$4,500.00 SOLD

Quantity Available: None

Item Code: 381-17

Blanket is constructed of a greenish/brown wool and meas. approx. 73.00 inches long x 64.00 inches wide with a hand stitched “US” at center. Letters meas. approx. 6.00 inches high x 4.50 inches wide. Each end has a dark stripe running from side edge to side edge and meas. approx. 3.75 inches in width.

The side edges of the blanket are bound while the ends are raw. Since the ends were not bound there is some fraying with minor amounts of material loss. The rest of the blanket is in very good condition with only some small scattered spots where the material has thinned. The letters at center are complete.

With the blanket is a modern notecard with “CIVIL WAR BLANKET USED BY PRIVATE A. CROW OF CO. E, 7TH INDIANA VOLUNTEER CAVALRY” typed on the inside front flap. Handwritten in the body of the notecard in modern ink is “CIVIL WAR / PRIVATE ABJAH CROW COMPANY E, 7TH CAVALRY INDIANA VOLUNTEERS / HIS OFFICERS – CAPT. JAMES T. SKINNER, 1ST LT. SLOAN / HE WAS A FARMER + SCHOOL TEACHER IN PRIVATE LIFE. / PRIVATE CROW IS BURIED IN WINFIELD, KS.” The note is then signed by the Granddaughter of Private Crow who lives in Kansas.

The above information should be corrected to state that the Captain of Company E was David T. Skinner and the 1st Lieutenant was James E. Sloan.

Abijah Thomas Crow was born in Pennville, Jay County, Indiana on November 5, 1845. Records show he was living in Camden when he enlisted as a Private on September 3, 1863.

During Private Crow’s service with the 7th Indiana they were involved in 21 battles and skirmishes in Tennessee, Mississippi, Missouri, Louisiana, Arkansas and Alabama. Private Crow was mustered out on August 29, 1865.

The census for 1900 finds Abijah living in Nebraska Township, Page County, Iowa. This same record shows that he married in 1877 and had 3 daughters and 2 sons. He died March 16, 1920 and is indeed buried in Union Cemetery, Winfield, Kansas as the card quoted above states.

This is a very nice example of an issue Civil War blanket.   [ad]
