“From The Livonia Gazette
Livonia, Livingston County, New York.
Friday, March 27, 1914
Mr. George C. Northrop, one of the best known business men in this section, died at his home in Lakeville Saturday morning, at the age of 85. He had not been in good health for some time, but his last illness was not of long duration. Mr. Northrup was born in Oneida county. At the early age of 14 he took up the study of civil engineering, for which even at that age he evinced a peculiar aptitude, and a few years thereafter was employed by the Erie railroad company in the survey of this division. He then engaged in similar work for the Cleveland & Mahoning railroad company of Ohio, and afterward was employed in the survey for the enlargement of the Erie canal. He located at Lakeville in 1884, and had been identified with the business interests of that village until his death. He married Lavinia Carnes of West Sparta in 1853. Two daughters and a son are the survivors of the five children, Mrs. W. H. Jackson of Livonia, Grant Northrop of Rochester and Mrs. Parsons of York, Maine. Mr. Northrop was one of the county's best citizens. He was upright in all his business relations and a man of varied attainments.” [ad]
