On the night of April 14, 1865 the mortally wounded president was carried to a back bedroom in the Peterson House, across the street from Ford’s Theatre; Lincoln died there early in the morning of April 15^th. Included in the display above are strands of Lincoln’s hair as well as a segment of a bandage that was used in the care of Lincoln, and which shows “dark colored spotting reminiscent of blood.”  The bandage fragment originated from the Hermann Rudd Collection in Buffalo, NY and was previously in the collection of the Holland Purchase Historical Society where they have another piece matching this example. The hair strand originated from a lock sold at Christie’s in 2002 from the famous Forbes Collection.

Matted, unframed display measures 14” x 11”.  Strands of hair are housed within a small magnified box for better viewing.
