Volume is titled “REVISED REGULATIONS FOR THE ARMY 1861.” The book is bound in a blue cloth with an embossed spread-winged eagle with sunburst and stars at center surrounded by geometric designs. This decoration is on both front and back covers. Spine has title in worn gold with eagle at bottom. Covers and spine are heavily worn and faded throughout. Front signature is partially separated. Binding is otherwise okay.

Interior runs 594 pages with index and is a readable copy. Some pages have light staining but nothing major. Pages have discolored some from age but all are present.

The second blank page has a bold period ink inscription that reads:

J. H. THOMPSON / 1ST LT. CO. G 14TH ARTILLERY / FORT RICHMOND / N.Y.H. / JAN 30TH 1864.”

John H. Thompson was born in New York in 1844. He was 25 years old when he was commissioned a 1st Lieutenant in Company G, 14th New York Heavy Artillery on December 16, 1863.

The regiment was assigned to the 9th Corps of the Army of the Potomac as infantry and saw action at the Wilderness, Spotsylvania, North Anna River, Cold Harbor and Petersburg where Lieutenant Thompson was captured on June 17, 1864. He was sent to prison in Charleston where he died of diphtheria on November 20, 1864. He is buried in Magnolia Cemetery, Charleston, South Carolina.
