Blue cloth covered hardbound book that meas. approx. 4.00 x 5.75 inches and runs 392 pages.
Full title is “A NEW SYSTEM OF INFANTRY TACTICS DOUBLE AND SINGLE RANK ADAPTED TO AMERICAN TOPOGRAPHY AND IMPROVED FIRE-ARMS.” Volume was published in 1872.
Covers have an embossed patriotic shield with an eagle perched on top while the spine has the title in worn gold lettering. Covers show light wear.
Interior has all diagrams and all pages. Paper has discolored some from age. Inside front signature is weak.
The volume has several names written in it. Inside front cover has “J. P. BRIGGS” in a blue scrawl. Opposite page has a period ink inscription that reads “MR. I. W. CHASE / BRIG. GEN. 3rd BRIGADE / D. R. I. MILITIA.” Inside back cover has “COL. J. S. BRIGGS / CMDG / WEST GREEWICH / CADETS / D. R. I. M.” in pencil and “JOSEPH MONEY JR. / CAPTAIN OF / WEST GREENWICH / CADETS” in ink.
A volume titled “Proceedings at the Dedication of the Soldiers' and Sailors' Monument: Erected in Providence” published in 1871 shows the West Greenwich Cadets in attendance being led by Captain Briggs. [ad]
