FRAMED HANDKERCHIEF AND IMAGES OF ROBERT F. BURRILL, 74TH ILLINOIS INFANTRY

$1,850.00 SOLD

Quantity Available: None

Item Code: 377-10

Handkerchief was carried throughout the Civil War by Robert Burrill. Also in the frame are two images of Burrill, one a tintype as a soldier, and the other as an older bearded gentleman.

Handkerchief is made of red patterned silk and measures approximately 23” x 26”. It is tattered all over with small holes. Edges are frayed and torn. This only adds character and is expected from a textile of this age that saw heavy use. The dark spots appear to be blood stains.

Tintype shows a young Burrill in uniform. He is seated and wearing a dark colored jacket with stand-up collar. His arm rests on a table next to his forage cap. Some light oxidation has occurred on image but it is very clear with good contrast.  The cabinet card photograph of Burrill features him wearing a dark colored coat and vest, with white shirt and tie. He is bearded and balding.

Robert Burrill was a resident of Rock Run, Illinois.  He enlisted on August 14, 1862 as a Private and on September 4, 1862 was mustered into Co. “I”, 74th Illinois Infantry. He fought in the battles of Perryville, Stone River, Chickamauga, and Missionary Ridge. He was listed as a POW on February 22, 1864 as he was captured at Niles Ferry in East Tennessee. He was in the Pemberton Building in Belle Isle and in Hospital #24 in Richmond, Virginia until February 21, 1865. He was mustered out on June 12, 1865 in Springfield, Illinois.

There is a handwritten note under the glass with documentation of the handkerchief and Burrill’s soldier history, and also included with this will be Burrill’s printout from Civil War Database.

Oak frame measures 31 ¼” wide x 35”high. It is very solid. Some slight wear, scratches and small dings are present on edges of frame.   [sm]
