DIARY GROUP - 1ST & 16TH MAINE INFANTRY SOLDIER

$650.00 SOLD

Quantity Available: None

Item Code: 450-136

This group of items belonged to Isaac R. Whitney from Windham, Maine. In May 1861 he enlisted for three months in Company C, of the 1st Maine Infantry. In August of 1862 he mustered into Company F, of the 16th Maine Infantry. He was sick and absent from duty as of mid-June 1863. Since most of the regiment was lost at Gettysburg, and he was still around (promoted to 2nd Lt.) after that, he may have still been absent during the Battle of Gettysburg.  Isaac was wounded in the Battle of the Wilderness in May 1864 and discharged in December of that same year.

The group consists of two cartes de visite; one each, bust views of Isaac and his wife, slightly faded with Portland, Maine back marks. Two camp passes, pen & ink, dated 1861. A small brass stencil, “Isaac R. Whitney”.  One small book, “Colton’s Map of Maine” with color tip-out map. One “New Testament” dated 1845 with Whitney’s name in the front cover in pen & ink.  One post-war “Pocket Memorandum” with Whitney’s name in flap, containing calculations. One “Diary, 1861” with scattered entries and other calculations…mentions the regiment entering Baltimore.  The last piece is his “Diary, 1865” which is filled with entries from Maine…news from the War is included.

This is a nice set of everyday items from a 16th Maine Infantry soldier.  [jet]
