Booklet bound in black leather and is held closed by a folding flap. Flap is strongly embossed in gold across the flap “SOLDIER’S HANDBOOK / U.S.A.” The leather is in good condition with light surface wear throughout. A little heavier on the edges.

The inside front cover is inscribed “PRIVATE WILLIAM CLARKE / NOVEMBER 17, 1884.” The book contains extracts from the 1881 Army Regulations, as well as sections titled Laws Relating To The Military Service, Extracts From The Articles Of War, Extracts From Laidley’s Rifle Firing, Signals-General Service Code, Detached Service and Take Care Of Your Health. The back of the book has pages for personal soldier information such as pay and service. Private Clarke filled in these sections. The service section states that Clarke served in Company L, 2nd US Cavalry. This was his 3rd enlistment. He was at Vancouver Barracks, Washington Territory October 5, 1884. He states that he was discharged on Surgeon’s Certificate on April 3, 1886.

The back of the book has a pocket for holding papers.

Pages are clean and in good condition. Binding is stressed but solid.  [ad]
