RELIC ID DISC FOR NEW JERSEY SOLDIER KILLED IN ACTION

$1,350.00 SOLD
Originally $1,500.00

Quantity Available: None

Item Code: M24570

This ID disc is in good relic condition and despite being dug it is entirely legible. The disc is cast in zinc or pewter and has some embedded dirt around the edges. The soft metal combined with ground action has caused some minor chipping. This is confined to the top edge mostly. The hole for suspending the disc from a string has split and was probably the cause of it being lost.

The obverse has a bust of George Washington surrounded by “GEORGE WASHINGTON / BORN FEBRUARY 22, 1732.”

The reverse is stamped “M. MARSHALL / CO. K / 6TH REG / N. J. V. / SWEDESBORO.” Between the name of the town and the regiment is “WAR OF 1861.”

Martin Marshall enlisted as a Private in Company K, 6th New Jersey Infantry on September 17, 1861. The regiment was assigned to the Army of the Potomac and saw action at Williamsburg, Fair Oaks, Malvern Hill and 2nd Bull Run. On the second day of the latter battle Private Marshall was killed in action. Details of his death and place of burial is not known.

The place of recovery for Private Marshall’s ID disc is also not known.

ID discs are a close personal connection to a soldier of the past and this one has special meaning.
