This ivory cotton night cap is trimmed in delicate lace. Two ties secure the cap under the chin. Measures 10” long at the front x 8 ¼” wide at the center. Ties measure 13 ½” long. A small handwritten note identifies this and reads, “NIGHT CAP WORN BY MRS. SARAH E. (LUSCOMB) LARRABEE OF SALEM & NORWOOD MASS, 1831-1861-1908”. Night cap is in very good condition and all stitching is tight. Yellowing has occurred with age and some light surface dirt is present. Item appears to be a combination of both hand and machine stitching.

Sarah E. Luscomb Larrabee was born on 8/25/1837 and married Herbert E. Larrabee. The couple had two children, Annie & Frederick. Herbert, born in 1837, worked at a tannery as a “Morocco Dresser”, and served in the 17^th Massachusetts Infantry, enlisting on 5/10/61. He was discharged for disability on 4/5/63 at New Bern, NC.  Herbert was a member of GAR Post 169 in Norwood, MA after the war.  Herbert died in 1895, Sarah in 1908; they are buried in Highland Cemetery in Norfolk.
