12.50" x 15.50" matted display with a strand of the actual hair of John Brown with a copy photograph of him, as well as a brief description of the origin of the hair. Single matted with blue stock and Florentine gold frame around the hair.
John Brown was tried and convicted of treason against the Commonwealth of Virginia for his raid on Harper’s Ferry in an attempt to start a slave uprising. He was hanged on December 2, 1859.
This strand of hair originated from a small envelope marked “JOHN BROWN”S HAIR” among a collection of Brown’s letters. A Xeroxed copy of the envelope is included in the frame above the lock of hair along with a statement of provenance signed by a lifetime member of The Manuscript Society. [ad]
