Period color lithograph lithographed by a. Hoen & Co. of Baltimore, Maryland and published by George M. Lackton of Washington D.C. in late 1864. This is the typical Soldier’s Memorial as often encountered with the spread winged eagle above a battle scene at top center flanked by a scene of a soldier in camp dreaming of home on one side and a wife at home dreaming about her husband in battle.

Below this is a text panel flanked by limp US flags. One is atop a vignette of a soldier and the one on the opposite side is a vignette of the soldier’s wife. In between the text panel is split into three sections. The center section has a scroll that reads “COMPANY B.” Below this is “1ST MASSACHUSETTS CAVALRY” followed by a list of Company officers, Sergeants, Corporals, Musician and Wagoner. At bottom is the muster in date. The two side panels list all the enlisted men of the regiment.

Across the bottom is a list of the field officers at center flanked by a scene of the soldier leaving his home and a scene of his return. Also listed in this area are the battles and skirmishes of the regiment up to December 1864.

The memorial is full color but has faded some with age. There are water stains along the edges as well as light surface dirt. The memorial was mounted on a sky blue piece of stock measuring 20 1/2" x 24 1/2". This was probably done to help repair the top right corner which has a 9 inch crease or tear. This is not very noticeable. The stock it is mounted on is dirty around the edges with one small chip along the right side.

The 1st Massachusetts Cavalry was mustered in September 9, 1861 and served in 75 battles and skirmishes including Brandy Station, Aldie, Gettysburg, Rapidan Station, New Hope Church, Parker’s Store, Todd’s Tavern, Ashland, and Jerusalem Plank Road. During its service the regiment lost 6 officers and 233 enlisted men killed and died of wounds with many more wounded or captured. They were mustered out on June 16, 1865.   [ad]
