Edward F. Possen (spelled POSSON in the records) was born August 2, 1841 in Albany, New York.

On January 16, 1864 the 18 year old Possen enlisted as a Private in Company L, 2nd New York Heavy Artillery. At the time he is described as being 5’ 6” tall with blue eyes, brown hair and a fair complexion. By occupation he was a mechanic. A note on his descriptive roll says that this was his second enlistment. Records show an Edward F. Posson serving from July of 1862 in the 121st New York however, no discharge date is given. There is also an Edward F. Posson who served from October of 1862 to April of 1863 with the 152nd New York. Despite the notation that this was his 2nd enlistment, Edward may well have enlisted three times.

Records show that Private Posson reached his regiment in the field on February 14, 1864. He was present for the fighting at Spotsylvania, North Anna River, Cold Harbor, Petersburg and Deep Bottom. In the latter battle on August 14, 1864, Posson was wounded in the right ankle by an artillery shell. His wound refused to heal and he was sent to Campbell General Hospital in Washington, D.C. He was mustered out there on July 6, 1865.

After the war he continued to have trouble with his wound and in December of 1877 his right leg was amputated below the knee. After this he began to suffer epileptic fits and by 1883 he was considered an imbecile.

He died in Albion, New York on November 4, 1914 and is buried in Millville Cemetery in Millville, New York.

Item comes with military and pension records from the National Archives.

In going through Posson’s extensive pension file there is quite a bit of debate over his condition and what rate he qualified for as a pensioner, but there is no mention of service in other regiments.   [ad]
