Wooden handled eating utensil has an iron two-pronged fork, knife and silver spoon that unfold. Handle is carved with, “J. PIERCE, CO. G, 11 MD”. Marking on reverse of fork reads, “ARMY KNIFE UNION”. Item is in excellent condition and is a rare Maryland collectible. Measures 11 ¼” when fully open, 4 ½” when folded.

The 11th Maryland was mustered in on June 16, 1864 to serve for 100 days, and on July 1 left for Baltimore for Monocacy, where it fought under General Lew Wallace on the 9th, holding the Confederates under General Jubal Early in check until reinforcements could arrive to Washington to save the nation’s capital, which was threatened. After the battle of Monocacy the regiment was on guard duty at Monrovia and Mt. Airy until October 1, when it was mustered out at the expiration of their 100 days’ term.

Joshua Pierce enlisted on May 31, 1864 as a Private and was mustered into Co. “G”, 11th Maryland Infantry. He was mustered out on September 28, 1864.   [sm]
