Wartime silver 7th Corps badge of a half moon and star.
The arc of the moon on the obverse is engraved “THOMAS MORLEY, CO. E, 13TH ILL. CAV.” This engraving is done without any embellishment. The surface of the badge has light tarnish but is otherwise very nice.
Reverse has a slightly bent “T” bar pin. A close examination of the reverse of the star shows it was made from a seated Liberty coin.
Badge meas. approx. 1.25 x 1.25 inches.
Thomas F. Morley was born in Markham, Canada on March 9, 1844. Just when he crossed to the United States is not known. On November 18, 1861 at age 18 he enlisted in Company C, 13th Illinois Cavalry in Chicago, Illinois. He is described as being 5’ 4.50 “tall with blond hair, brown eyes with a healthy complexion. By profession he was a laborer.
The 13th Illinois served in Missouri and Arkansas and took part in 11 engagements, mostly at Pine Bluff, Arkansas.
Trooper Morley was present with his regiment until May when he suffered heatstroke and was sent to the hospital at Jefferson Barracks, Missouri. He returned to his Company sometime during the next month and on January 1, 1863 he was promoted to Corporal.
Morley became a re-enlisted veteran on January 3, 1864. At this time he also procured his own horse and horse equipment and received compensation by the Government.
On the re-organization of the regiment Morley was transferred to Company E where he remained until mustered out on August 31, 1865 at Pine Bluff, Arkansas.
After the war Morley remained in the United States living in Barrington, Illinois until 1869 before going to Afton, Iowa where he remained until 1877 at which point he moved to Hebron, Nebraska where he died on December 4, 1922. He is buried there in Rose Hill Cemetery.
Full military and pension records come with the badge. [ad]
