Sylvester Philips (also spelled Phillips) was born in Guilford, New York State on May 5, 1838. At age 23 he enlisted as a Private in Company C, 114th New York Volunteers on August 8, 1862. At the time he was described as being 5’ 7 ½” tall with a medium complexion, gray eyes and gray hair. By occupation he was a farmer.

The regiment left New York in September of 1862 and was assigned to duty in Baltimore until January of 1863 when it sailed for New Orleans where it joined the 19th Corps. However when the regiment left Private Philips was in Chesapeake Hospital at Hampton, Virginia suffering from “general debility.” He did not rejoin his regiment until April 1, 1863 and took part in the battle of Fort Bisland on the 13th.

Philips remained with his regiment through their service at Port Hudson but became ill again on September 3, 1864 and was sent to New Orleans and from there to DeCamp General Hospital on David’s Island in New York Harbor. He remained there until April when he was shipped further north to a hospital in Augusta, Maine. On May 27th, he was returned to his regiment still serving in Louisiana.

In September the regiment was sent to Virginia where it saw action at Winchester on the 19th. In that action Private Philips was wounded in the left leg and sent to a field hospital to recover. He was once more fit for duty on January 14, 1865 and returned to his regiment.

Private Philips was discharged at Washington

He died in New York on December 15, 1918 and is buried in Evergreen Hill Cemetery in Sidney, New York.
