Memorial features a colorful shield and spread-winged eagle with laurel leaves perched at the top. Images in shield represent Kirk’s service – a company pin, stripes indicating ranks he held, a shoulder strap, crossed sabers and medal. In the center is a seal with the coat of arms of PA. Battle honors are listed. Colors on memorial have remained vibrant.

Mat has gilt border that surrounds memorial. Yellowing has occurred with age on both memorial and mat. Light surface dirt and smudges are present. Frame is stained dark brown with a gilt inner rim and engraved design at the corners. Measures 24 ¼” x 31 ¼”. Wire is present on reverse for hanging.  Shows scattered light surface scratches and nicks.

Charles H. Kirk enlisted on 8/22/1862 as a Private and mustered into "E" Co. PA 15th Cavalry. He was mustered out on 6/21/1865 at Nashville, TN. Promotions received were: Corpl. 10/30/1862, Sergt. 3/1/1863, 1st Sergt. 3/15/1863, 1st Lieut. 5/8/1863.

The 15th PA Cavalry was organized in Carlisle, PA on 10/1/62 and mustered out: 6/21/65 at Nashville, TN. Officers killed or mortally wounded: 3, officers died of disease, accidents, etc.: 0, enlisted men killed or mortally wounded: 22, enlisted men died of disease, accidents, etc.: 103.  [SL]
