By Brevet Lieut-Col. W.J. Hardee, formerly U.S. Army. Published by J.W. Tompkins & Co., Louisville, KY, 1861. Front eps owner inscription, in ink: “Jno W. Carlisle/ Company C/ 13 Regt S.C.V./ Octr 1861.” 232 pp., fldg. diagrams. In black glazed cloth, 5 x 3.5”, with leather spine with gilt lettering. Exhibits light wear & rubbing at the extremities. Else VG, with tight spine & attractive lettering.
John W. Carlisle was commissioned into “C” Co., SC 13th Infantry, 9/1/1861. He and his regiment were surrendered at Appomattox Court House, 4/9/1865. The 13th S.C. participated in all major engagements of the Army of Northern Virginia from the Seven Days Battles, June 25-July 1, 1862, through Appomattox, where Capt. Carlisle later recalled Gen. Custer passing in front waving a white flag just as the 13th S.C. was preparing to go into action.
Carlisle died in 1827 in Spartanburg County, SC and is buried there in Oakwood Cemetery.
