Mears enlisted as  Private on August 22, 1862 at the age of 21 in Philadelphia. He transferred to Co. H after he was one of the mutineers before Murfreesboro, TN on December 26, 1862. He was discharged March 21, 1863 because of a disability received at the Battle of Stones River.

The folding knife/fork/spoon combination separates into two halves. The ricasso of the blade is marked, “New York Knife Co. Walden, NY”. Carved into the rosewood of the knife is his name. An old tag is also attached.
