Hand inscriptions on original piece of leftover Civil War hardtack pay tribute to heroes from the Span-Am War. They read, “AMERICA’S HEROES REMEMBERED THE MAINE- 1898- MEMENTO OF THE SPANISH AMERICAN WAR FROM CORPORAL JAMES H. ARGUE, COM SIXTH REGIMENT, PENNA, VOLUNTEERS, ENCAMPED AT THE FOLLOWING PLACES- CAMP HASTING, CAMP ALGER, VA, CAMP MEADE, PA. HOME ON THIRTY DAYS FURLOUGH, TO BE MUSTERED OUT OF SERVICE. RETURNED HOME WED. NIGHT, SEPT. 7TH 1898. PHOENIXVILLE, PA. DEWEY AT MANILA, SCHELEY AT SANTIAGO. PROCLAIM LIBERTY THROUGHOUT ALL THE LAND AND UNTO ALL THE INHABITANTS THEREOF. GALLANT CHARGE OF COL. SEREITS ROUGH RIDERS. HOBSON’S COMMAND THE MERRIMAC.”

Wording is flanked by the U.S. and Cuban flags in the upper corners. A sketch of the Liberty Bell is in the center with, “1776 – 1898”.

Some of the hardtack is chipped and has worn off the bottom edge. Writing remains dark and readable.   [sl]
