Bell enlisted on August 25, 1862 at the age of 23 in Jefferson, Greene County, PA. His occupation is listed as farmer. He was appointed Corporal on 11/23/1862. On 12/26/62 he, along with others of the unit, mutinied just before Murfreesboro, TN. He was transferred to Co. K in March 1863 and reduced to Private. Bell died 8/27/63 of chronic diarrhea.

The small pocket hymnal has his name and “Anderson Cav. Comp. K” in pencil on the inside page. The bible has “John H. Bell, Book, Jefferson, Greene County PA September 6, 1862” in ink on inside page. Written below in pencil is name, “Co. I, Anderson Cavalry Murfreesboro Tennessee 15th Pennsylvania Cavalry April 5, 1863”. Both leather covered boards detached.
