Hardcover volume meas. approx. 6.25 x 9.25 inches and runs 356 pages.

Blue cloth cover has the title stamped in gold on the spine. Covers have some light surface dirt, scuffing and edge wear but are otherwise good.

Title page reads “THE HISTORY OF THE NINETEENTH REGIMENT OF MAINE VOLUNTEER INFANTRY 1862-1865.”

The volume was written by John Day Smith, late Corporal in Company F. Volume was published in Minneapolis, Minnesota in 1909.

Interior is well bound and tight making this a good readable copy.

Inside the front cover is an early 20th Century ink inscription that reads “A. R. WITHERSPOON COMPANY I PRIVATE” with a notation of “PAGE 344” which is where Witherspoon’s name appears in the regimental roster. Another notation reads “GIVEN TO FLORENCE PARRY BY CLYDE WITHERSPOON 7/16/59.”

Twenty-four year old Alpheus L. Witherspoon was living in Camden when he enlisted as a Private in Company I, 19th Maine Infantry on August 25, 1862. Early in his service Witherspoon spent a short time in the hospital at Bolivar Heights near Harper’s Ferry. He was promoted to Corporal in 1863, to Sergeant in 1864 and was mustered out at wars end on May 31, 1865.

The 19th Maine served in the 2nd Corps of the Army of the Potomac and saw action at Antietam, Gettysburg, Bristow Station, Wilderness, Spotsylvania, North Anna River, Cold Harbor, Petersburg, Reams Station and High Bridge. During its service the regiment lost 5 officers and 371 men killed, died of wounds and disease not to mention many more wounded and survived.

Alpheus Witherspoon died in 1914 and is buried in Maple Lawn Cemetery, Bolivar, New York.

Sergeant Witherpoon’s son Clyde, who is mentioned in the inscription in this book, worked in the oil industry gifting 200 shares of Standard Oil of Indiana stock to the Bolivar Library which became the foundation of that library’s endowment. He died in 1970 and is buried near his father.  [ad]
