Private Payson A. Pierce was a resident of Woodstock, Vermont, who mustered into Co. “C”, 6th Vermont Infantry, 9/5/1864, and was mustered out 6/19/1865. Payson contracted neuralgia, rheumatism and heart disease during his final two months of service and was awarded a $12 per month disability pension in 1897, later passing away in 1911, with his wife receiving a $20 per month widow’s pension.
The 6th Vermont Infantry was mustered at Montpelier, VT, in October 1861. Assigned to the 2nd Brigade, 2nd Division, 6th Corps, it participated in the Siege of Yorktown in May 1862, and participated from then on in all the major campaigns and of the Army of Potomac—(Antietam, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, the Wilderness, etc.) through the Siege of Petersburg. In the summer of 1864 the 6th Vermont took part in Gen. Sheridan’ Shenandoah Campaign, and, during Private Pierce’s time with the unit, was in engaged in the 1864 Battles of Opequan, Winchester, Fisher Hill, and Cedar Creek before returning to the Petersburg line. Serving in the Appomattox Campaign, the unit was present at the Battle of Sailors Creek, witnessed the surrender of Lee’s Army, and participated in the final grand review before being mustered out, 6/26/1865. During service it lost 203 men killed and mortally wounded and 215 men killed and wounded for a total of 418.
Though Private Pierce served with the 6th Vermont only during its final months, he nonetheless saw considerable action. His ID’D 6th Vermont/6th Corps badge is a superb Vermont collectible. Accompanied by service & pension records. [jp]
