Beveled camp mirror in wooden case features an engraved and painted image of a dancing boy on the cover. Cover is riveted and freely slides to open and close. Hale scratched his name on the reverse of cover, “W.H. HALE / NH”.
Wood shows scattered light surface scratches. Measures 4 ½” x 2 ¾’ at widest point.
William H. Hale was born in New Hampshire. He enlisted on 6/5/1861 at New Hampshire as a 2nd Lieutenant. On 6/5/1861 he mustered into U.S. Navy Marine Corps. He was listed as wounded 7/21/1861 at Bull Run, VA. He was promoted to 1st Lieutenant on 9/1/1861 and Captain on 12/8/1864. He served on the ship USS PORTSMOUTH while in the Navy. He died on 8/29/1867 at Pensacola, FL.
Mirror was purchased at an estate sale of the Hale family in Nashua, NH. [sl]
