Published by Harper & Brothers, New York, 1857. Owner inscription, in ink, in front eps. 457 pp., w/appendix. In brown blind-stamped buckram, 5.25 x 7.5”, w/gilt spine lettering. Exhibits light wear & rubbing of extremities, light chipping at head and foot, & left side of pine. Else VG, w/ tight spine and page signatures.

James F. Meyers was commission 1st Lieut. into Co. “A”, 47th PA Vol. Infy., 9/16/1861, and mustered out 9/18/1864. The 47th PA was mustered in Harrisburg in September 1861. After serving at Beaufort, SC, in at Key West, FL, it was transferred to the Dept. of the Gulf & saw action at the Battle Sabine Pass before being transferred to the east where it participated in Sheridan’s 1864 Shenandoah Valley Campaign (Battle of Winchester, Fisher’s Hill and Cedar Creek). It was mustered out in Charleston, SC, December 25, 1865. During service it lost 117 men killed and mortally wounded and 173 by disease for a total of 290.
