Authorized & adopted by the Secretary of War. Published by J.B. Lippincott, Philadelphia, 1861. Owner inscription, front eps — “A.S. Cushman.” 450pp., folding diagrams. In green blind-stamped buckram, 3.75 x 5.25”, w/gilt spine lettering. Exhibits light exterior wear & rubbing of corners. Hinges slightly weakened, slight wrinkle in spine. Else VG w/tight signatures, clean text.

Austin S. Cushman was a 33 year old lawyer who enlisted as a 2nd Lieut. and was commissioned into Co. “L”, 3rd Mass. Infy., 4/23/1861, and was mustered out, 7/22/1861. On 9/16/1862 he was promoted to Captain and commissioned into Co. “D”, 47th Mass. Infy, 9/20/1862; then later promoted to Major, 11/6/1862 and transferred to 47th Mass. Field & Staff. Mustered out, 9/1/1863, Cushman held a number of Massachusetts GAR officers, and died in Boston, 1/29/1907.

The 47th Mass. Infy. was a nine-month regiment organized at Boxford, 10/6/1862. Assigned to the 19th Corps, the unit served in the department of the Gulf, participating in skirmishes at Amite River and La Fourche Crossing, LA, in April and June 1863. It was then mustered out in Boston, 9/1/1863. During its nine month service the unit lost one man killed and 37 men by disease for a total of 38.
