Born in 1838 in Circleville, OH, Nelson Luckey Lutz enlisted as a Captain and was commissioned into “A” Co., 27th Ohio Infantry, 7/24/1861; and resigned 3/4/1863.  It appears he had previous service in the 2nd Ohio, a 3 month regiment, though a brief amount of research was not able to confirm this. He also served in the 13th Ohio infantry with his name incorrectly listed as Newton Loutz, though the dates conflict with his service with the 27th OH. His pension file index card confirms service in both the 13th OH and 27th OH.

His unit, the 27th Ohio was organized in August 1861 and was assigned to the western army. It participated in the Siege of Island No. 10, and the 1862 Battles of Iuka and Corinth, where it was stationed at the time of Capt. Lutz’s resignation in March. Later stationed at Memphis, it participated in Sherman’s 1864-65 Campaigns—Atlanta, the March to the Sea and through the Carolinas, and the Battle of Bentonville. During service it lost 86 men killed or mortally wounded and 128 by disease for a total of 214.

Lutz died of rheumatism on 7/13/86 in Chicago, IL, and is buried there in Oak Woods Cemetery.  The following bio is included on both civilwardata.com and findagrave.com, most likely his obituary:

“Captain Nelson Luckey Lutz died at Chicago, III., July 13th, 1886, of rheumatism. Captain Lutz was born October 31st, 1838 at Circleville, OH, at which place he resided until the breaking out of the rebellion, when he entered the ranks of the 2nd Ohio regiment, and with it participated in the first battle of Bull Run. After the expiration of his three months' term, he assisted in recruiting and organizing Company B., 13th Ohio regiment, of which he became First Lieutenant, which position he resigned to accept the Captaincy of Company A., 27th Ohio regiment, with which he served under Fremont in Missouri, and afterwards participated in the capture of Island No. 10, in the battle of Corinth, the battle of Iuka and campaign in Northern Mississippi. He resigned in March, 1863, and in the following December was married at Circleville, OH, to Carrie Howard, only daughter of Henry Howard, deceased, former Sheriff of Pickaway county, by whom he had two children, Florence and Howard, the former fifteen and the latter four years of age. In 1865 he established a drug store in Genesee, Mo., where he remained until 1868, when he moved to Chicago, and there remained until his death. As a soldier and citizen he was as all men ought to be, and now we his comrades are called upon to join his bereaved family in tearful regrets over his untimely death.”

Further research is certainly a possibility to clear up the details of his service.

Solid manual, solid Ohio collectible. Accompanied by a brief amount of research material.  [jp/ld]
