Quantity Available: None

Item Code: B6207

Item is an 1862 pocket testament in good overall condition.

Volume meas. approx. 3.00 x 4.75 inches and contains the New Testament only. Covers are wrapped in brown cloth that shows some light wear around the edges. Spine has “TESTAMENT” in gold.

Inside front cover has a period ink inscription that reads “FROM THE SALEM CHURCH MISSIONARY SOCIETY. BOSTON 1863 PRSENTED TO HENRY TRYON.” The first blank page has an old 1920’s or 30’s red bordered label with an ink inscription from the early 20th Century that reads “BIBLE OF HENRY TRYON WHO DIED IN LIBBY PRISON DURING CIVIL WAR. UNCLE OF MINE. SADIE TRYON MACLAURM.”

Interior is well bound and for the most part is clean with some light scattered foxing. Testament was printed by the American Bible Society.

Research shows only one Henry Tryon from Massachusetts serving in the Civil War. He is carried on the rolls as Henry TYRON. The record shows that this Henry W. Tyron was 32 years old when he enlisted as a Sergeant in Company F, 27th Massachusetts Infantry on September 16, 1861. He rose to be 1st Sergeant on June 2, 1863 and became a reenlisted veteran on November 25, 1863. Tyron continued to rise in rank being promoted Sergeant Major on March 1, 1864. He was wounded at Petersburg on June 18, 1864 and received a commission as 1st Lieutenant on August 11, 1864. He was discharged for disability on June 15, 1865.

Despite the later inscription in the testament Tyron did not die in prison nor was he ever captured. It is possible this is not the correct soldier but since he is the only soldier from Massachusetts with the correct name the family history is probably mistaken.  [ad]
