Black and white memorial printed in 1863 and lists the members of the 9th New York State Militia also known as the 83rd New York Volunteers.

The top of the memorial is decorated with a spread-winged eagle perched on a patriotic shield with panoply of flags super imposed over a camp scene on one side and a battle scene on the other with “SOLDIER’S MEMORIAL” across the top and flanked by flags posted on a keep on each side.

Below all this are three columns. The first lists the Privates of Company F with notations, the second lists Field and Staff Officer of the regiment, Company Officers, Sergeants, Corporals, Musicians and Wagoner. The third column lists the remainder of the Privates from the first column as well as recruits. These three columns are flanked by a scene of a soldier leaving home on one side and the soldiers return on the other.

The bottom of the document is dominated by a large battle scene flanked by arches listing the history of the regiment from 1861 to November 1863 and the opposite side lists the battles of the 9th from July of 1861 to Gettysburg in July of 1863.

Memorial looks to be in the original wood frame and meas. approx. 22.50 x 26.50. The frame has a rococo border that has several minor chips along the edges. The document itself looks to have faded a bit with one faint water stain just above the center point. There are also one or two small spots of white discoloration but nothing that detracts.

The 9th New York State Militia saw action at Cedar Mountain, 2nd Bull Run, South Mountain, Antietam, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, Bristoe Station, Kelley’s Ford, Plymouth, Wilderness, Todd’s Tavern, Spotsylvania, Totopotomoy  Creek, Bethesda Church and Cold Harbor.    [ad]
