These small prayer books were printed and handed out to new soldiers by various religious and charitable groups and are typical of the items found in a soldier’s personal effects. This one was done in Philadelphia by the Protestant Episcopal Book Society and bears a printed testimonial by Bishop Alonzo Potter dated June 1861. They were intended to be carried in the pocket, have cardboard covers, a fabric binding, and are only 64 pages long.

We recently acquired a large group of material from George W. Mowers of Fayetteville, Pa, just west of Gettysburg. He die two tours of duty in the army during he Civil War: six months in the 21st PA Cavalry, July 1863 through February 1864; and four months in the 87th PA Infantry, February through June 1865. He also assembled a large collection of Gettysburg material since lived directly along the Confederate line of advance on July 1, near their line of retreat on July 4, and near the town for his entire life.

We had an identical booklet inscribed by Mowers during his service in the cavalry and is possible this was a personal copy as well, but it bears only a pencil scribble on the back page and Mowers seems to have written his name in his own books, so it is also possible this was a pick up from Gettysburg. In any case, it is a nice example of a soldier’s prayer book that would fit well in a display of soldier’s personal effects or “smalls.”  [sr]

Accompanied by military & pension records.
